"Many go fishing all their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after."
- Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
"Thoreau may be right....but I'm after fish today."
- Michael A. Rauh, MD
“If you give a man a fish, he will be fed for a day….
However, if you teach a man to fish, you can feed him for a lifetime….
But remember, If you teach a woman to fish…. watch out!!!! She will get a team together and win tournaments!!
Truthfully… If you are here to “fill a cooler”, let me know and I’ll get you in touch with a “meat fisherman”. There are many captains out there who focus exclusively on catching as many fish as possible… as fast as possible. If you want a “cooler full of fish for your freezer”, i would suggest going to Wegmans… It’s cheaper!! Again, It is not my intention to simply “fill a cooler”. I want to make a fisherman out of you and your fishing partner.
I am in the business of education and learning, while helping to grow the sport of recreational fishing on the Great Lakes!!
My charters are different than others in that there is a focus on your education. I will spend time prior to the trip reviewing boat safety procedures, emergency protocols, and on the water “SHTF” scenarios. We will review the weather reports, Great Lakes currents, and forecast our day. I will help you to learn rod assembly/disassembly, reel settings and functions, and appropriate reeling and fish catching “postures”. I will focus on knot tying, lure selection, rod setup and deploying strategies. We will discuss how to use downriggers, planer boards (“big boards” and inline), and you will learn netting skills. I will focus on the use of electronics in finding fish, identifying appropriate water temperatures for desired species, and autopilot / trolling tactics to optimize the direction of troll and “clean spreads”. We will review how to setup (make your own), and use various Great Lakes techniques including “leadcore, copper, weighted steel, directional divers, torpedo, planer boards, and downriggers”.
